Free Greek Music Concert Celebrates Journey

The concert will explore the journey of Greek immigrants

For many Greek Americans the story of how they reached America's shores is something told over and over again and passed down for generations.

The City of Tarpon Springs Cultural Center will honor those stories when it presents "Xenitia: Journey Songs of the Greek Diaspora" later this month. The showcase is a series of public programs that eplore the journey of Greek immigrants.

A special part of this exhibit includes a musical performance by the members of the band Ellada, who will join with local Kalymnian vocalist Irene Karavokiros and visiting clarinetist Jim Stoynoff. The performance will take place on May 31 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30pm.

The event is being presented in conjunction with The Smithsonian exhibition "Journey Stories," which explores the powerful tales of how we and our ancestors came to America and to the place we now call home.

While at the cultural center, visitors also can enjoy Journeys to Tarpon Springs, a small exhibition featuring items brought by local families to remind them of the homes and families left behind. The exhibits are at the City of Tarpon Springs’ Center for Gulf Coast Folklife from Thursday, April 11 through Friday, July 5, 2013.
