Thrift Store Manager Charged with Fraud

The 55-year-old woman from Tarpon Springs admitted to averting almost $5,000 from the store, police said.

Cynthia Chapman, manager of the Shepherd Center Thrift Shop, was arrested last week and charged with scheming to defraud, WTSP 10 News reports.

Officials say that over a three-year period, from January 2009 to January 2012, Chapman averted more than $4,500 from the thrift store. The money was to go into the store’s bank account, but Chapman kept the deposits instead, Tarpon Springs Police said.

According to WTSP, Chapman admitted that the deposits never made it to the account they were intended for and agreed to make full restitution. She is free on $5,000 bail.

The thrift store supports the Tarpon Springs Shepherd Center, which is an organization that offers free clothing, health services and food to locals who need it.
