Last week, Sweetbay announced the closing of its Tarpon Springs store. The store is scheduled to close in February.

What would you like to see take its place on Pinellas Avenue?

I'd love to see a Target go in.

I would love to see an Aldi Store or their sister store Trader Joe's. I have read and been told about how different and unique the Trader Joe stores are and either would help to fill a void and bring a little diversity to Tarpon Springs. Hopefully the store will not remain empty for very long. When one store is empty it affects the surrounding stores as well.

I agree, a Trader Joe's would be nice.

I thought it was the Sweetbay on North Pinellas and Anclote that was closing. The address at the downtown Tarpon Sweetbay didn't match what was in the newspaper.

I agree, Becky. I believe it's the wrong picture. Until I verified the address, when I first saw the headline, I was very worried. Losing the store at Meyers would be a huge blow to development of that corner.

Any thing to counter the ever increasing prices at Winn Dixie. Yes, Adli's or Trader Joe's although I'm not sure about TJ's prices. Another supermarket is needed if only for the competition.

I just stopped by the Sweetbay at Alt. 19 and Meres and there is a sign in the door saying that store would remain open, verified by a number of very happy employees! I'm glad - I enjoy shopping there. The store is immaculately clean, prices are good, the employees are WONDERFUL and the quality is great.

I was worried about the Sweetbay by Mere's, too.
Total wine would be fun.

You are correct. I live in Holiday & have shopped at that store for years. When they opened the store at S. Pinellas, I knew that it would eliminate the need for the one near my home.
The one at anclote has a big sign that they are closing. They are always busy, but I guess it costs the corporation too much to run both. They will lose some of the business share, but expenses will go way down.
I will miss the store that they are closing, as it is a frquent stop for me to buy my grocerys. I'll miss the people there too & wish them luck.
If they don't mind driving to S. Clearwater, apply at Macys Credit Customer Service on 34st off of Ulmerton. It's a good place to work & we're usually hiring.

I am glad that people have commented to correct the idea that our new Sweet Bay was the store affected. That store is doing well and has a lot of loyal customers. The older store at Anclote Blvd and Alt 19 is the one closing and it is much smaller and does not carry a full range of products. I shopped there until they opened the new one and was surprised when they left the old store open. A Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or Fresh Market might be a good choice to put into that smaller space. The new Sweet Bay at Meres Crossing was a wonderful addition to Tarpon Springs and I am glad it is remaining open.

Unfortunately, the stores that have been mentioned, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Fresh Market only open stores in affluent towns. Hence, the fact that they're in Sarasota and Naples. I am also glad that the SweetBay near Meres will remain open.

I can see that the 2 people running for commission know nothing about the economy. We don't decide who comes in there, only a company decides. Sweetbay is closing because they are way overpriced. They changed their name through the years from Food Lion to Kash n Karry and then to Sweetbay. But they could overcome their rip off pricing. Its sad they built that new store which is always vacant of people as it is so near Winn Dixie, which may have some high prices but most are not. If I were dreaming I would say Publix or Target, but reality is they would not go where the traffic is not.
And as to who understands what Tarpon Springs needs, its Tommy Frain, not the has been people that have run and run. Lets get some smart an youth at the same time. Did you see them talk? If so it is obvious who needs to help turn Tarpon Springs around. It has the highest prices on water and sewer. They have been trying to lie to the public for years about an R/O plant which never could be because of the area sitting on salt water, not brackiest water. No one has had the GUTS to fight the lies. They just sit there for their power. I don't know about you but I think its time to shake things up and have someone willing to stand up for truth and the people.

Aldi would be great and keep everyone on their toes for pricing!! They have a wide variety of items and low low prices but good quality.

I hate to even "think" this but from seeing other small shopping centers with empty stores in Holiday, I doubt that ANY store will replace the Alt. 19 & Anclote Sweetbay and it will stay empty for a VERY long time .. so sad.

I fear that Carla is right. That's how Shopping centers die. Without the anchor store, the rest loose so much traffic that they close down, one at a time. There is also Sweetbay liquor store & a Pharmacy that doesn't say Sweetbay, but I think they are attached corporately. There will be a large vacancy right in the middle heart of the center. The entire center may go under. The owners & other merchants workers must be worried. It is depressing to see a shopping center die like that, but we see it in Florida repeatedly.
