Surprised? Tarpon Springs Ranked Higher Than San Diego

Boat U.S. magazine recently gave a nod to 10 cities that are ideal for retirement and boating. Locations around the country were selected and Tarpon Springs was one of them.

Earlier this month Tarpon Springs was ranked number five out of Boat U.S. magazine's top 10 cities to retire, play and thrive.

In the article, Bill Berens, a retired 70-year-old from Virginia, told the magazine he bought a home in Tarpon Springs last year and is a fan of the area.

"There's easy waterway access to the Gulf of Mexico, and plenty of coves and islands around for picnics," Berens told Boat U.S. "And the water around Tarpon Springs is so clear you can see right down to the bottom"

Tarpon Springs was praised for its fishing, culture and antiquing district. The sponging mecca was the only city in Florida to make the cut.

The full list of top boating towns included:

  1. Traverse City, MI
  2. Gainesville, GA
  3. Port Townsend, WA
  4. Annapolis, MD
  5. Tarpon Springs, FL
  6. New Bern, NC
  7. Portland, OR
  8. Portland, ME
  9. Camdenton, MO
  10. San Diego, CA
