Your "community investment" can pay big dividends

One of the most meaningful places my career path in the newspaper biz has taken me over the years is to small communities like Tarpon Springs, where a certain "sentimental spirit" fills the air around its bayous, bridges and beaches. What I find most interesting about my chosen home here is the way in which our eclectic array of people work and play together with some basic understanding and mutual respect for the fact that at least on some level we share a common goal, which is to savor the rich history and promising future our little slice of heaven affords us.
Most impressive to me are the scores of local individuals I have met who have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all of us who call Tarpon home.
And while I am impressed with certain civic leaders in our community, I see their role as being more of a representative member of the "system" we all adopt in order to maintain some semblance of order.
Finally, I will use the overused term "unsung heroes" to define those who do not seek admiration or attention when giving of themselves - but rather to ensure that the quality of life here reflects the caring and compassion shown by your friends and neighbors who truly love living, playing and prospering within our city limits.
I'm not talking politicians and civil servants here, but rather the proud members of our community who volunteer their time and talents to special projects, causes and programs designed to upgrade our living conditions. These individuals who regularly make their "community investments" are the building blocks of a solid community - they are to be admired and imitated by all of us.
