As the weekend dedicated to the Peace 4 Tarpon project approaches, organizers add finishing touches around town.
A final installation of the Peace Flag Project will take place on Thursday morning as volunteers hang peace flags from the bayou at Craig Park east down Tarpon Avenue. Peace flags hung by the main staircase at the bayou are considered a public art installation and will remain throughout this weekend's Fine Arts Festival, which draws thousands to the area. The organization will be posted up at the festival with a table to promote their mission. Peace 4 Tarpon launched the Peace Flag Project a couple months back and have worked countless hours to bring the event to life. Weekly meetings at the Tarpon Sunday Market drew support as residents created peace flags from donated materials. Small businesses like Eco-Bean also created and hung the …

The City of Tarpon Springs has designated the event as a public arts project.
To send a message a of peace to the community and beyond, Tarpon Springs hopes to form an army of 10,000 peace flags to display from April 5-8. Every Sunday at the Tarpon Market, folks can decorate a peace flag. The flags will be strung together and hung throughout the city. Donations of materials needed to create the flags are being accepted at the City Manager's Office from now until February 22. Donation requirements incude: The Peace Flag Project has gained momentum since November, 2012 and according to organizers, residents, businesses and healthcare providers throughout the area have come to the front lines to show their support for the project. The city-wide initiative known as Peace 4 Tarpon is the first of its kind, not just locally but nationwide.
Robin Saenger, founding director of Peace 4 Tarpon, served as the Vice Mayor of Tarpon Springs before she decided to pursue a passion she had developed for bringing education and awareness to the community. The group's purpose is to make Tarpon Springs a trauma informed community through education and facilitation of organizations that are already in place like the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Suncoast and the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art. When Saenger started the organization, she had to define "trauma" and ended up finding a wide variety of experiences that would cause it.
