Tarpon Springs Walmart is Open
The new location brings 200 jobs to the area as well as an eco-friendly features.
Walmart of Tarpon Springs, located at 41232 U.S. Highway 19 North, opened its doors last Wednesday. The celebration included live entertainment from members of the Tarpon Springs High School Jazz Band and Choir and the posting of colors by local Girl Scouts.
The 85,023-square-foot store has brought 200 new jobs to the area and boasts an environmentally friendly atmosphere, which includes recycling, energy/water reduction and sustainable product purchases.
Adding to the celebration, Walmart donated $13,000 to local charities. Representatives from each organization accepted checks handed out by Tom Bigler, the store manager. Charities that received donations included:
- Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast
- Citizens Alliance for Progress
- Metropolitan Ministries in Pasco
- Shepherd Center of Tarpon Springs
- St. Petersburg College
- Tarpon Springs High School
- Tarpon Springs Housing Authority
- Wheelchairs 4 Kids, Inc.
According to Tarpon Springs Vice Mayor, Chris Alahouzos, the store has been in the works for a while, but not without some hard work.
"It has been a long road bringing a Walmart to this city," said Alahouzos. "We are so glad that it is finally here."
